In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part.The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. A solo oboe enters with cello in canonic reply and all the time the music builds in texture and

A work for Soprano Woodwind 2 Horns and Strings.Duration: circa 15 minutesProgramme Note: 'This work was commissioned as a possible companion piece to Mozart?s Exsultate Jubilate and the decision was quickly made to write something as a complete contrast. The poems chosen one anonymous from the early 16th century the other two by the famous Scottish poet William Dunbar [1460? 1513?] describe the promise of salvation after life?s dark passage. Each of the three poems echo this thought: ?In celum ther is joy with Thee? ?A short torment for infinite gladness? and ?Since erdly joy abides never Work for the joy thatlastès ever?. Thus in each poem the poet can overcome the fear of his inevitable death with the certainty of salvation: this work also has its ?dark? moments but the overall mood is one of calmness and peace. As with the words there are several musical motives that link the three songs. The musical motive for the refrain ?Terribilis mors conturbat me? in the first macaronic poem [also a salute to Mozart since the Exsultate is in Latin] returns a little higher and more despairingly in each verse until the last verse where it is played a whole octave higher. This motive reappears [played mostly by the oboes] in the last song but now the pitch of each repeat goes in reverse that is from high to low. The famous motive of the Gregorian chant Dies Irae [representing death] is used to accompany the prayer of the second song. A musical motive for the joy of Paradise appears in the second song ?A free choice given to Paradise or Hell?. Le Champion de Tir is de muzikale uitbeelding van een schuttersfeest. In de opening horen we het aanbreken van de dag. Het haantje kraait. Even later luiden de klokken die de mensen ter kerke roepen voor een plechtige viering ter opening van het feest. Een koraalachtig gegeven met een dalende chromatische melodiek verklankt de alom tegenwoordige ?mijnheer pastoor?. Dan klinkt de prachtige gregoriaanse melodie van het Veni Sancte Spiritus. Het geheel speelt zich immers af op tweede Pinksterdag. Na de kerk begeven we ons in een vrolijke optocht waarin de vogel wordt meegedragen naar het schietterrein. Er klinkt een gezellige mars. Dan horenwe het gebabbel en geroep van de marketentsers. Met hun zware en ook hoge stemmen praten ze druk door elkaar. De optocht gaat verder langs het huis van de oude schutterskoning. Deze trekt mee en voert zijn charmante gezellin mee hetgeen uiteraard een gevoelige muzikale wending teweegbrengt. Dan begint de wedstrijd. Er wordt lustig op los geschoten. Als het mis is wordt er gelachen is het raak dan komt er applaus. Als de vogel tenslotte is neergehaald is er een nieuwe schutterskoning en wordt er een feest aangericht. Horen we echter aan het eind toch nog niet even de vogel roepen?
